Gas Heat Rates Hit Record Highs for 2004-2005 Winter.

Homeowners in Massachusetts using gas heat this winter will not be immune to rising energy costs around the country. According to the winter residential gas heat rates approved by the state's Department of Telecommunications & Energy (DTE) on November 1, 2004 right through April 2005, Oilheat may remain the most economical of all home energy sources once the heating season winds down next spring and statewide average price per gallon for the entire season can be fully examined.

Each winter, the DOER conducts a weekly survey of full-service heating oil dealers to determine the statewide average price for a gallon of heating oil. Over a twenty-four week period during the winter of 2003-2004, the statewide average price for a gallon of heating oil was $1.44. Using that number as a benchmark, back in January of 2004, gas heat customers on average were paying 35 cents more per equivalent gallon than heating oil customers for 200 therms of gas when the two fuels are compared on a Btu-to-Btu basis.
